The
Bay of Islands is approximately 3hrs drive north of Auckland and
is a favourite holiday and fishing destination with locals and
tourists alike.
The port of Opua is the first port of call for many yachts
visiting New Zealand It is not hard to see why this picturesque
region which contains nearly 150 Islands and thousands of secluded
bays and beaches, is a haven for overseas 'boaties' and sports
fisherman.
Although most visitors come to the Bay of Islands for the many
marine activities, the Bay of Islands is steeped in New Zealand
history. The nations founding document, The Treaty of Waitangi was
signed at the famous Treaty House on the Waitangi National
Reserve.
The tourist centre of the Bay of Islands is Paihia. From
here visitors can join sightseeing tours and many of the areas
hotels and restaurants are all situated here.
